The many hats of a copywriter
It seems to me that I have always worn a lot of hats. Since I graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 2008, clutching my First Class BA (Hons) in Screen Studies, I have been a PR & Social Media Officer, a SEO Copywriter, a Content & Press Executive, a Creative Content Manager, a Director of a social enterprise and, since 2016, a Freelance Copywriter.
But it doesn’t stop there. As well as Freelance Copywriter, I’m also a Project Worker (Dissemination & Social Impact) at People’s Voice Media, Associate at The Hoxby Collective, a mum to two wonderful little girls, homeowner and prolific decorator, reader, knitter, telly addict (that was a great gameshow, wasn’t it?) and film lover.
But wearing lots of hats is good. Not only does it keep my head warm, but it also gives me a huge amount of lived experience that I can bring to my writing. And that, in turn, makes research much easier. And research is at the heart of great copy. When your customers, clients or partners read your website, you want to sound authoritative and that comes with research, experience and a damn fine writer.
